And the Tony goes to...

Last Sunday, TBS showed "The Sound of Music" which KC had never seen (gasp!). So we watched this classic four hour musical. KC couldn't believe it was so long, I told him next time we would watch "Fiddler on the Roof". Anyway, watching this brought back many memories of dancing around the room with Hilary and Becky while wishing we were Liesl and singing "Sixteen going on Seventeen". This wasn't the only event we sang and danced to, I think we were supposed to be a girl pop band, but weren't ever discovered. We would have had a mighty, rockin' christmas album if I might say so myself. But to get on with things, I broke out my CDs and started to play all my favorite musicals this week while I worked. Since we all love lists and youtube so much I thought I would share with you my top 5 favorites: (this could take you alot of time to watch, so don't feel obligated)

Bye Bye Birdie

The start of my love for musicals. We watched this every new year's eve. And any other chance it was played on TV. I finally found a VHS copy of the movie when I was 15. Life was changed by this movie and all my hopeless romantic ideas and dreams of meeting and falling in love with a celebrity (aka - Ricky Martin) was brought from this movie. If you haven't seen it, pay particular attention to the bum shake in this video. Kristin can demo this for you if you ever want to know what it looks like when done in 3D.

Music Man

I can't watch or listen to this without thinking of my mom. When we drove through Iowa this summer I kept singing "Iowa" and "We've got trouble". KC and Paul didn't really understand. Made me wish my mom was there. She is a HUGE fan of this movie and even wrote a romantic novel based with this musical as part of the plot. Which was a great book, and she needs to get it published. I remember the first time my mom introduced us to the movie, we watched it non stop for probably a year straight.

Chicago

Velma Kelly is my most loved character of all time. If I ever became a singer on broadway (one of my three wishes from the genie), the first role I would play is Velma. The dancing, the singing, the costumes, I love it all. I have seen the movie and the broadway version of this show. And both were great, but the play version was indescribable.

Wicked

Kristin and Randy I need to remind you again that you are my favorite two people. Like I mentioned earlier this year, they sent us to Wicked on broadway for our honeymoon. And it was AMAZING. Really you can't even explain the humor, the sets, the singing. It was just out of this world. (PS- the rule is, if you haven't seen this play you can't watch this video. It makes the play so great if you haven't seen anything.)

Phantom of the Opera

One of my life goals is to go to this play in Vegas or on broadway. I fell in love with this musical 5 minutes into the movie. And I saw it 5 times in the theatre. It is so breath taking. And gets you so deeply wound in the story and the characters.

  2. Fun!! I need to do more stuff like this on my blog huh?
Chicago is definitely one of my favs...but I've only seen the movie. I also LOVE Sound of Music..honestly I think it is my favorite of all time. And congrats on getting KC to watch it. I haven't been successful with Josh yet. I tried to get him to watch Fiddler on the Roof but I think he lasted 10 minutes!! GARNERS!! ha ha! It was good talking to you on the phone, we'll have to again soon, when Gabby isn't being such a stinker!!

  3. I was in Bye Bye Birdie in high school. It wasn't one of my favorites, but after you're in one...they tend to grow on you. (Oh, and the play is quite a bit different than the movie!)
Not that you care but my top 5 are:
    1. My Fair Lady
    2. Singin' In The Rain
    3. Jekyll & Hyde
    4. Wicked (a pretty high number for a play I've never even seen!)
    5. Tie between Sound of Music and Fiddler

However, I think that narrowing it down to 5 is almost a sin. It leaves off so many greats...South Pacific, King and I, Miss Saigon, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Oklahoma, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and any plays I've actually been in. Plus if you include movie musicals...well than I could go on all day!!

I also have a "roles I must play before I get too old" list. Pretty much I'm too old (and fat) for all of them already.
    1. Elphaba (Wicked)
    2. Lucy (Jekyll & Hyde)
    3. Rizzo (Grease)
    4. Belle (Beauty and the Beast) **This one's NEVER gonna happen!!**

Gosh I love musicals! Don't you think that life should be a musical? I try to make my life a musical, but Patrick ruins it every time by singing off key and not knowing the dance steps!! What a great post Gen!

  4. GOSH! Those were absolutely perfect choices -- it made me want to watch all of them and buy the soundtracks. My personal favorite is the music man, but bye bye birdie and phantom are a very close second.

This makes me want to see wicked even more!!

  5. OMG!!! Watching that Bye Bye Birdie clip brought back some many memories! We must have watched that movie almost everyday and we knew every word to every song! Now I wanna go out and rent that movie! One of my favorite musicals is Moulin Rouge...which I just watched yesterday! I can't even count how many times I've seen that movie...and I still cry everytime at the end!!!

  7. Just kidding. Wait no longer here's my list:

    You are RIGHT on with:
    1: Wicked
    2: Chicago

    BUT
3: Swap out The Music Man (Because I have yet to see it) for Aida
4: Phantom has got to go in favor of Thoroughly Modern Millie
5: Bye Bye Birdie for Fiddler. I chose Fiddler for the same reason you chose BBB. It was my first introduction to a play, and thus will always be my first love.

  8. Ya, the list could go on, I thought I would keep it to my top 5. But Fiddler is great, Oklahoma, Grease, Beauty and the Beast, Moulin Rouge (I heart Ewan), Thoroughly Modern Milley, and how could I have forgotten AIDA...that musical is brilliant.

And, Lara, I would love to know what plays and parts you played in all the shows you have been in, I am so jealous of your talent and experiences. So you will have to tell us about them sometime...

  9. Okay, you all forgot the best:

    Yankee Doodle Dandy

The best, the best, the best. I watched that ALL THE TIME as a kid. The way Jimmy Cagney tap dances down the white house stairs. "Give My Regards to Broadway," makes me cry just writing the words. The way his girlfriend "shimmies" her upper arms. My family used to wait the whole move for that second. And then Oklahoma. My mother would gather us around, cook popcorn in oil on the stove top while shaking the pan across the burner that shook her whole body. Then she's slice up apples and we'd gather around the old black and white. Then, onto Camelot. I feel like I saw that movie a thousand times. So much that Marveen Brown and I first cried when King Arthur sang Gwenaveer (sp)--and don't forget you were named after St. Genevieve, and then we watched the movie much that one time we laughed hysterically when King Arthur sang the song cause we noticed his mascara was running! I knew every word to every song in that movie. K, then, yes, Fiddler on the Roof. So much of life is about Fiddler on the Roof. Then, yes oh yes, Sound of Music. I couldn't wait to have some handsome man dance with me on a balcony and look into each others eyes as we danced slower and slower until we stopped. Ah, true love! K, but, people, come on: Joseph! I love Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It's so silly and fun! I agree with "the Garners", I wish love was one big musical. But, the most tender to my heart is The Wizard of Oz. "If I Only Had a Brain"; "We're Off to See the Wizard"; "Oreo-oh-oh"; "Follow the Yellow Brick Road"; one of my favorite right now because Malia sings it to Ozzie: Snip, snip here, snip, snip there and a couple of ladeedahs, that's how we play the day away in the merry old land of Oz. And who can forget the theme of all my life: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high. There's a land that I heard of Once in a lullaby. Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue. And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true. Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops, Away above the chimney tops.
    That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere, over the rainbow, bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow, Why then - oh, why can't I?" Just had to write them and ponder of rainbows and you and grandma and all the things I like most about life and love. Thanks, Gen, for letting us indulge. It's been wonderful! Love you both, Mom
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow,
    Why, oh, why can't I?
