Survival of the Fittest

Every January comes and the gyms fill up. When everyone is most excited about getting back into shape and fit, it's the time of the year that I dread going to the gym. I hate showing up and the treadmills are occupied or as soon as I finish my run and go to the weights a big, sweaty dude is taking up the station.

This sounds horrible. I know.

I definitely want everyone to take care of themselves and exercise. People getting healthy isn't what bothers me.

It's the January, 4 week, only-there-to-take-my-machine-and-not-actually-meet-any-goals spurt.

Gyms don't plan on the whole world working out together. So they limit the machines and space that can occupy their normal customer base from February through December.

Let's take my gym for example. It's got 2 treadmills. 2 Stationary bicycles. An elliptical. And 1 weight lifting bench, with 1 set of each dumbell weight. That's it.

Normally, this is pretty reasonable. Occasionally, I have to do my weight lifting 1st to wait for a treadmill to open up. But, most of the time things just cater fine to the every day gym goers.

But, if every apartment has on average 2-3 people and let's say even 5% of them are at the gym each given hour after they've made their resolutions...then this is a ridiculously small gym come January. And thus it has been for the past 2 weeks...It was driving me nuts. I almost took my runs out in the cold. Almost. But I couldn't justify running by myself in the dark. I've had too many bad experiences.

But then things changed yesterday.

No one was at the gym.

I couldn't believe it.

Have people really given up on their New Year's resolutions already?

I am not perfect by any means. But come on people. It's only 10 days in! Oh well, let them slack. I have my gym back! All to my lonesome! I couldn't be more thrilled, unless I owned a treadmill (I can't wait for that day!).

Needless to say, if you are still working on your resolutions, you've beat out my apartment complex. Pat yourself on the back.

So far, I've done pretty well. Made a good payment to KC's loans, used some coupons and planned more before I shop, kept my kitchen and bathroom spotless, I've even blogged more...and GULP... entered my name into a triathlon lottery. [teeth chatter]

How are you all doing on your resolutions?

  1. I admit, I'm one of the newbies who have invaded the gym. But I've been the one who goes crazy when all the newbies show up too! It's annoying, but like you said, they disappear quickly. My free trainer (got 4 sessions when I joined) said that they've already seen a 15% decrease in attendace since Jan. 1st! That just makes me sad. I'm SO glad I'm not part of that statistic! :)

  2. I have to say, I was amazed when I pulled into the gym parking lot this morning. It looked about normal. No problem getting a lane at the pool either. I think you are right--lots of people already giving up!
