Funhouse

[P!nk]

Saturday the fam-damn-ily met up at Library Square in downtown Salt Lake City for the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Our aunt, Big Vic (my mom's brother's wife), passed away from breast cancer. So each year we run/walk the race in her memory.

This year, my cousin, Becky, took a part of her with us -- well, she took her shoes with us. These ===========>
were Big Vic's running shoes. How cool is that?! My cousin, Becky, is the sweetest. You'd love her. This was totally something she'd think of doing. Just so neat.

I was experiencing some issues with pain in my upper quad. That along with Krick being preggers and  my family usually walking the race while Krick and I run it, I figured it would be both SMART and FUN to just walk out the race.

<========So we got these two, little Vic, Becky, my mom, Krick, Randy, myself, KC, and SHOCKER....Kelsy....who was surprisingly awake...out to the starting line.

Walking was a MUCH different experience than running the Race for the Cure. It took us about an hour to walk 3.1 miles. It was a leisure stroll. But, it was good. We chatted the entire way. Randy and I had a good discussion about gardening. Enough that it empowered me to go straight home that afternoon and put in my own garden -- which I had been slacking on.

In addition to having a nice morning stroll, my quad was feeling much better after walking it out for the 5k distance.

[Although, I should say, I ran out the last tenth of a mile with Scratch and Lil' Dot. You think I wouldn't run anything? Ha! But the kiddos were hilarious. Lil' Dot ran sideways the entire time and then proclaimed after we crossed, "That was HARD!" Considering she ran sideways and in platform heels....ya! But she's got a training up on the competition for the High Heel-a-Thon in NYC :) Meanwhile, Scratch just coughed out his asthma. I love those two.]

All in all, it was a good, fun event. Although, we decided it's probably our last Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. We are going to find a different charity to support in my Aunt's honor. The Race for the Cure has just become so gimmicky. It's not the same experience it once was.

However, before skipping out, we did get these great photos:

The. 2nd Marathon. Post.
(AKA - 26.2 miles + some TREACHEROUS stories, so get ready for another doozie of a post.)

Today I received my favorite medal, by finishing the Salt Lake Marathon.

It was the hardest to earn.

It's beautiful, both in aesthetic and what it stands for.

After months of training, I woke up yesterday morning at 4:55am to run the Salt Lake City Marathon. I've done the half before. A flat course. Easy peasy. I had my training in. I had improved my pace. During my training long runs, I was in reach of Boston Qualifying (BQ) time for the full marathon. I was banking on one factor pushing me into BQ, that race day I almost always run faster. There was a glimmer of hope I could actually do this... on my 2nd marathon.

I woke up feeling great. Excited. It was cloudy and drizzling outside, but rain was not forecasted between 7am and 10am... thus, creating an expectation of workable weather for the race period. I bundled up: sports bra, green tank (for Boston support), long-sleeve shirt, wind breaker, UA cold gear running tights, gloves, hat, socks, and shoes. I was prepared for 40 degree temps.

My mom picked me up and we drove to the start. Getting out of the vehicle, the rain hadn't ceased. We had grabbed garbage bags [faux ponchos] and hoodies to keep us warm and dry while we waited out the pre-race events. [In line for the restroom (pic to the right), I ran into my high school friend Richard (orange arrow). Fun time. Totally brought me back.]

As 7am neared my mom and I split up to find our pacers (my mom was shooting for sub 2:45 in the half distance and I for sub 3:30 in the marathon). There wasn't a 3:30 pacer team, so I debated between the 3:35 and pushing it at the end or 3:25 and having room to drop back. I made the executive decision to give myself some room and lined up behind the 3:25ers - Steve and Steve. Because of the Boston bombings, the organizers led a moment of silence for Boston and then started up "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond. Having gone to multiple Red Sox games in Fenway, I immediately got chills thinking about my surrogate home, Massachusetts. This has all been so close to my heart, with having lived there and then recently preparing to qualify to run in the Boston Marathon. My thoughts have been directed back to the tragic events of Monday over the course of the week. I felt blessed to get to participate in this race and these moments of seeing the running community continue to run and not fear, but support. Boston, I love you. "B" strong.

I signed right inside the N in "Remembering"
The race gun went off and as we ran we sang to Sweet Caroline, pumping our fists as we sang out, "Sweet Caronline....bum, bum, bum." I kept up behind the Steves until the crowd broke up and then carried a conversation with them about pacing, traveling, work, and some random topics, for the first 7 miles. During which time I beat my 1 mile, 5k, and 10k PRs:

6 seconds faster
11 seconds faster
1 minute and 39 seconds faster
As we passed the 7 mile marker, the rain started to come down -- hard. I decided to drop back, considering I had gained some time during the first 7 miles. The rain would make things more challenging, so I decided to conserve some energy and keep between 8-8:30 pace. At the half mark, I made my fourth PR of the day:

2 minutes and 13 seconds faster
And then things started to go downhill, but not literally...because this race was mostly a gradual incline with spurts of quick downhill. Not a good mix. But my temperature dropped, my attitude dropped, my energy, and speed.

At mile 17, I was exhausted. I ran into a previous co-worker and friend, Oscar, who ran with me for .25-.5 of a mile. It was a nice distraction from the wet, cold, exhaustion I was going through physically. We caught up on life and I told him I had left the place we had both worked, ListMarketer. But after, he left to go back to his spectating, I moved forward and my body was begging me to give it a break.

At mile 18, I knew BQ was out of the picture. I couldn't keep up this pace. So my next goal was sub-4 hours. I made the decision to pull out my old Jeff Galloway run-walk-run method and walk 1 minute every mile. Giving my quads a break -- because they were hurting and frozen. The walking was enjoyable. Refreshing. But picking back up to run was torture. But, I did it. Until mile 23 hit. And when my minute was up, I kept walking. My legs were heavy. My clothes soaked through. My feet sloshing around in my shoes. My hands were shaking through the drenched gloves. And my hat had rain pooling off the bill. I was done. I pulled out my phone to call KC to pick me up. I was going to get my first DNF (did not finish).

As I held my phone in my hands, during mile 23, I debated about not having to feel failure or getting into a warm bath. Which was more important to me? By mile 24 and with the 4 hour mark approaching, I dialed the number.

KC: "Vieve! We are all at the finish line...we didn't miss you, did we?"
Me: "No, I am walking. I've bonked. Can you please come walk with me or send someone else to come walk with me?"
KC: "Where are you?"
Me: "I am at mile 24. I am just going to walk the last 2 miles. But, I need someone here to get me through it."
KC: "I will come right now."

And that was it. I wasn't quitting. I was going to take the humbling shuffle to the finish line.

I kept walking. My phone rang, still in my hand. It was my dad... expecting that I had finished and calling to wish me congrats. He asked about the race and laughing I told him I was still working on it. That I was currently walking. I had to laugh at the fact that, who takes a phone call during a race? My step-mom chimed in (also on the call), "Sweetie, are you okay?" It was the golden question. I guess I was. I mean I hurt, both mentally and physically. But I was okay. I told them a brief explanation of what had happened and then we closed the call.

Halfway into the 25th mile, I saw KC and his dad coming my direction. KC cheered out, "Vieve! You are so close!" His positive attitude was just the ticket. There was no disappointment in his voice. None of the thoughts running around in my head saying that it was shameful to walk, that I could have made 4 hours, that laid out all the things I had done wrong. He just assured me that I was going to make it. And that finishing was enough -- even more so, that it was great.

He peeled my wind breaker and gloves off me and gave me his coat. I want to say that I became immediately warm. Unfortunately, I was frozen to the core. But, it was still better than having the wet layer on top of 3 other wet layers. Now at least something was dry. And it was an extremely sweet gesture from Kase. He was good to me.

About one block further, my pregnant sister, Krick, and KC's mom joined us. Immediately when I saw Krick tears started to flow. This is the sister that ran my first marathon with me. It was the person that I knew could most empathize with me. And she said through her tears, as we hugged, "I am so proud of you! You've done so well. You are doing great!" I wish I had the words to explain what that meant to me. I don't. All I have is tears. For having such an amazing sister. It just overwhelmes me. I love you, Krick.

Together, the five of us walked the remaining 1.5 miles [taking 23 minutes to do so]. For my sake, as I kept tearing up, Krick thanked me for walking so that she could participate in this race with me. She had wanted to run a portion with me, but being 8 mos pregnant, that wasn't feasible. But, even though she said she was getting joy out of being part of that run with me, I am pretty sure she did more for me.

KC and I "running" to the finish
With the finish line in sight and being too proud, I switch back into my windbreaker -- dawning my race bib and ran to the finish. KC at my side. I didn't BQ. I didn't sub-4. But, I did finish. And I even finished with a PR. Ending at 4:34:05.

The downward spiral...

After the race, I hugged my mom and cried more. She had beat her 2:45 goal. I am so proud of her.

We didn't stick around for any post-race festivities, but got in the car and went straight home for a long, HOT bath.

One last story. I laid in that HOT bath that I had been dreaming about [and that almost made me quit]. The phone rang, it was my sister Hilary. I relayed the events of the race. At this point in the day, I had beaten myself up for 2 hours over what a pathetic failure I was. She said something so profound, to me. "Gen, why did you want to qualify for Boston? Why do you want to run Boston? It's because you want that experience. That's all running is about -- experiences. And you got some amazing experiences today. Experiences that also show what kind of a person you are. Experiences that bonded you with KC and Krick." She is spot on. I am lucky for that. So my take away is positive:

I finished. I was strong. So strong that I asked for help when I needed it, rather than quitting.  And, I have amazing people in my life that were there to help and support me.

Set Fire to the Rain

[Adele]

This gloomy weather has sure messed up my training schedule. With the race in 12 days that's not the best thing.

This weekend's open water swim didn't happen. I was scheduled for a run and a swim this weekend. I moved the run up to Saturday when rain was forecasted in hopes Sunday would be clear. I ran 8.5 miles after eating Tacotime with the family. I tried to get out of it, but lunch together after our annual garage sale is tradition. So I regretfully caved. It was a horrible, bad, painful idea [the Tacotime, not the garage sale -- I made $60 off my junk]. End of the story: worst run I've had probably this entire year. I just felt heavy and sluggish.
Family photo at the garage sale.
Top to Bottom (L-R): Kels, Hilz, Mom, Oz, Malia, Me, Joff, and Krick
All my siblings, minus Dano.
Sunday, it rained again. SO I decided to move my swim to Monday and move my Yoga up a day. I struggled with that, too. I think I've been eating so well that I was still suffering from my poor choice of food the day before. I had a junk food hangover. My body wasn't having it. But nonetheless, I made it through the hour.

Today, I woke up to blue skies. I packed my swim gear fully planning to hit the Rec center pool after work. The day went on with sunshine. But, as I was leaving work I could see the dark clouds moving in. Not again! Rescheduling for the third time, I pushed my swim back and moved up my speed work run.

However, with the clouds looming the temperatures had dropped to the 80s. I decided rain or not I was taking my speed work outside to take advantage of the cooler weather. I ran my first fartlek run, well my first conscious fartlek...I just learned what this speed session actual entails recently. I also explored a new route, which I rather enjoyed.

The first 3 miles rain drizzled lightly on me. Then it started to rain more. Then pour down. I had water dripping down my face. Off my hands. I was soaked. But I had a great time. I only recall a couple runs in the past where I got this wet. (1) The last long run before my first half-marathon. Remember that run, Nate? We were covered in gnats and sopping wet. Haha. (2) When I used to run with my brother-in-law, Patrick, there was a time or two where we returned home drenched. I recall those runs being miserable. But today, it felt great. I was on fire. (And I am not talking about the record number of honks I got..it was getting kind of silly. If you are looking for some catcalls to boost your self-esteem go for a run in the rain. You'll get more than you can count on your hand.)

Seriously though, after some setbacks this weekend it felt great to dominate the road. I fought the wind and rain and still came out 7.34 miles later with having beat my 10k record time by an entire minute (Old PR exactly 53'00").

(PS - if I haven't said it...I LOVE the new NIKE+ website!)
That's right. I'm killer tough. [Tough isn't usually a word I'd use to describe myself, so I'm taking the opportunity to use it now. You know...while I can.]

Post run.
You can't really tell but I was dripping from head to toe.
Now, I've got my swim training piled up for the next few days....so is it too much to ask for a little sunshine? Pretty please...

ALSO, if you are interested, my stellar sister-in-law Crystal has recently started a fitness blog (eatcleanandtraindirty.blogspot.com). She's done a spotlight on me today. Hop over there to read our Q&A session. And then keep reading the rest of her posts. I really like the conversation about diet vs. regular soda.

Goodnight and Thank You

3 Things for Today...

1) I swam the full mile consecutively today. Actually, 1700m.
[plus another 1050m of warm up/drills/cool down]

2) Hilz left me a box of pastries and a mixed CD when she stopped by to drop off cupcakes for my co-workers birthday. Mixed CDs are the best! [And only better when assisted with sugar]

3) I got this in the mail:

A good day in my books.

Time of the Season

[The Zombies]

For seriously. I need to take a break from NYC. I am getting behind on some of the good stuff...

THIS Sunday my seester is on Cupcake Wars Champions! Set your DVR's for 6pm MST on the Food Network channel. If you missed the first episode she was on....go here. To see their audition video...go here.

If you are on facebook, you probably saw THIS photo:

KC, Chris Kattan, and Me
For which KC added this comment:
"It kind of looks like I shouldn't be in this pic. Oh, wait. I've got one like that too ;)"
Yep, he got one of just Chris and I, too....and it was kind of awkward.

Chris Kattan and Me
The short of it...Chris kept eyeing me after the performance. We stepped up to take a photo. Great. KC then jumped out to take one of just Chris and I. Chris blatantly looked my up and down and did a "huh, huh, huh" growl. Then was like, "Yes, let's get one of just us." A-W-K-WAR-D! [He was kind of a perv without that...let alone with that.]

Okay..NEXT!

I went to a race clinic tonight. I learned a TON at the nutrition clinic. I was beyond mesmerized at the Bike Maintenance clinic. But, the running clinic....I think I am a pro. There was only a small bit of information about form that I hadn't heard before, but the rest...come on! I've got this! [I don't think I realized how much I actually know about running...and to be honest, since I am such a beginner in the other sports I needed that boost of confidence.]

This one is a killer....literally. Ummm...if yous alls didn't know...I am TERRIFIED of Zombies. I think it's because I really like watching Zombie shows and it's caused me to believe this could really happen some day. If there was an actual Zombie Apocalypse I've sworn I would kill myself at the first news announcement of it. I've informed KC, so that he doesn't go looking for me...just assume I'm peacefully dead and my body is being fed on.

So, enter the Miami man....

No back up. Let me tell you how the news was broken to me.

It's 7:30am on Wednesday. My co-worker, Cortni says to me and another colleague, "So did you guys hear about the guy in Miami?" Ben mumbled something about having heard. Not knowing, I looked at Cortni and said, "Is it bad?" (Thinking it was probably another school shooting or something.) Her face got stone cold serious, she leaned forward in her chair, and whispered "F!@#%ing Zombies, Man". I immediately got a pit in my stomach. For reals?! "That's not funny...Zombies! Where's a sharp object I can kill myself with now?" Luckily, she finished the story before I had a chance. And we've been laughing about the "F'n Zombies, Man" comment for a good 40 hours now. If there is an actual Zombie Apocalypse can someone break the news to me that way? At least I'll get a good laugh before I commit suicide.

Ho, hum...anything else this week I've missed? I think that's good for now. Back to your regularly scheduled NYC update...

[Can you believe I made it through a post without mentioning Ricky Martin?...okay...almost made it through an entire post...shucks!]

I Never Planned On You

[Newsies - Broadway Cast]

Pop Quiz!

What are the two things you need to remember from these NYC posts?
[And unfortunately, meeting Ricky Martin isn't one.]

.....
....
...
..
.

Come on...you've got this...

Think.

Thhhhiink...

Okay, fine. The answer can be found here.

So why Top of the Rock?

Here's why:

Isn't that a magnificent view?

I've been to the Empire State Building twice. Once in the day. Once in the evening. It. Doesn't. Match. This. View. Do you understand? I am trying to say, the Empire State Building is not worth the time (2-3 hours in line vs. 15-20 min) or money ($40 vs $25) if you are looking for the view.

If you are trying to meet up with a stranger you heard on the radio...that's a different story. If you are wanting to just check off a tourist attraction on your list (aka - "Been there. Done that")...that's also a different story.

But the Top of the Rock is the real deal. IMO...skip the pire. <--that's my sweet slang for Empire. Nice, huh?
